چکیده

The linguistic content of the masker is important for the benefit of masking release in understanding noise-corrupted speech. The present work investigated how Mandarin sentence recognition is influenced by background noise with different linguistic content via two studies, i.e., speech perception and intelligibility prediction. Mandarin sentences were corrupted by Mandarin-, Cantonese-, and English-speaking multi-talker (i.e., 2-talker and 6-talker) babbles at –5, –7.5 and –10 dB signal-to-noise ratios, and listening experiments were conducted to collect the intelligibility data of Mandarin sentence perception. Results showed that 1) the recognition of noise-corrupted Mandarin sentences was notably influenced by the linguistic content of background noise, with an increased influence from English, Cantonese to Mandarin; and 2) present intelligibility indices accounted modestly well for the variance of Mandarin sentence recognition when background noise contained different linguistic content.

Speech-on-speech masking with variable access to the linguistic content of the masker speech for native and nonnative english speakers.

BACKGROUND Masking release for an English sentence-recognition task in the presence of foreign-accented English speech compared with native-accented English speech was reported in Calandruccio et al (2010a). The masking release appeared to increase as the masker intelligibility decreased. However, it could not be ruled out that spectral differences between the speech maskers were influencing th...

Effect of spectral degradation to the intelligibility of vowel sentences

Based on the noise-replacement paradigm, recent studies showed that vowels carried more perceptional information for sentence intelligibility than consonants. Considering that vowels contain many important acoustic cues for speech perception, this study further assessed the effect of spectral degradation to the intelligibility of Mandarin vowel sentences. Mandarin sentences were processed to ge...

The effects of dialect variation on speech intelligibility in a multitalker background

Speech intelligibility in a multitalker background can be affected by the language of both the talker and the interfering speech. This study investigated whether this interaction is modulated by dialect variations of the same language. American English listeners were presented with target sentences in either their own General American English (GAE) or a different accent (Southern American Engli...

Relative Contributions of Amplitude and Phase to the Intelligibility Advantage of Ideal Binary Masked Sentences

Many studies have shown the advantage of using ideal binary masking (IdBM) to improve the intelligibility of speech corrupted by interfering maskers. Given the fact that amplitude and phase are two important acoustic cues for speech perception, the present work further investigated the relative contributions of these two cues to the intelligibility advantage of IdBM-processed sentences. Three t...

Intelligibilities of Mandarin Chinese Sentences with Spectral "Holes"

The speech intelligibility of Mandarin Chinese sentences of various spectral regions, regarding band-stop conditions (one or two “holes” in the spectrum), was investigated through subjective listening tests. Results demonstrated significant effects on Mandarin Chinese sentence intelligibilities when a single or a pair of spectral holes was introduced. Meanwhile, it revealed the importance of th...
